The rollout of Windows 11 version 22H2, also known as the 2022 Update, is entering a new phase, as Microsoft is starting the automatic updates.

In other words, if you are running Windows 11 version 21H2, your device might automatically download and install the new release.

Until now, Windows 11 2022 Update was exclusively available for seekers, meaning that users who wanted the new version had to manually check for updates in Windows Update. The same option continues to be available today, so if you want to download the update without waiting for Microsoft to push the update to your device, head over to Windows Update and check for updates manually.

Users still allowed to manually initiate the update

Microsoft says the automatic update phase will happen in stages, but the first devices that will get the new update are the ones that have been running version 21H2 the longest.

“Today we begin to automatically update consumer and non-managed business devices running Windows 11, version 21H2 Home and Pro editions to Windows 11, version 22H2. Since Windows 10, we have been helping Windows users stay up to date and secure with supported versions of Windows through automatic updates. We are utilizing this same approach for Windows 11 to help you stay protected and productive,” Microsoft said earlier this week in a new announcement regarding the rollout.

“The automatic update to Windows 11, version 22H2 will happen gradually starting with those devices that have been using version 21H2 for the longest period of time. As always, you will have the ability to choose a convenient time for your device to restart and complete the update.”

Of course, the automatic update to version 22H2 could still be suspended for certain devices if Microsoft discovers a bug that requires an upgrade block.
