New configuration now available from the Microsoft Store

A new Microsoft Surface Go configuration is now available from the Microsoft Store, coming with 4GB RAM and 128GB storage for just $499.

Previously, Microsoft was selling just two different versions of the Surface Go, as it follows: 4GB RAM and 64GB eMMC storage for $399 (also known as the base model) and 8GB RAM and 128GB SSD storage for $549.

However, a mysterious configuration that was placed right in between the two was available at retailers like Costco, coming with the same amount of RAM like the base version, but with the SSD storage available on the more expensive sibling.

Available for $549 at Costco, the same version is now being sold by Microsoft as well for $499, though there’s a catch.

While at first glance it may seem like the Costco bundle is more expensive, therefore not making any sense not to buy this version from the Microsoft Store, the trick here is that the software giant’s Surface Go comes without a Type Cover. Available for $99 separately, the keyboard is part of the bundle when purchased from Costco, so you actually save approximately $50.

Running Windows 10 in S Mode

This new Surface Go configuration comes with Windows 10 Home in S Mode, but you can still unlock the device and run full Windows. The S Mode restricts users to apps published on the Microsoft Store.

With the SSD storage upgrade, the Surface Go should be substantially faster than the eMMC base configuration, which given the hardware specs, is clearly a welcome boost.

Surface Go is Microsoft’s smallest and cheapest Surface model ever released, and it is specifically aimed at the education market and casual users who aren’t interested in running heavy apps. Time will tell if the Surface Go will sell well, but Microsoft appears committed to bringing more configurations to the market in order to fit all customers.
