Only Windows insiders are getting it for now

Microsoft has started the rollout of another big feature for Windows 11 users. The company is updating Snipping Tool with support for screen recording, something that users out there have been drooling over for quite a while.

The feature is first going live for Windows Insiders, with Microsoft planning to expand it to production devices at a later time.

If you’re part of the Dev channel and want to try it out today, the new feature is included in Snipping Tol version 11.2211.35.0. However, worth knowing is that not all insiders are getting it right now, as Microsoft uses a phased rollout to make sure everything is working as planned for Snipping Tool users.

“We know that Snipping Tool is a favorite among the Insider community, so we are very excited to introduce a built-in screen recorder with this update! Snipping Tool has always made it quick and easy to capture and share content from your PC, and with screen recording built-in, we are expanding these capabilities to even more types of content,” the company explains.

The new record button shows up right in the main screen, so the experience overall is as straightforward as possible.

The currently available features allow users to select the part of the screen they want to record, with Snipping Tool then giving them the option of previewing the recording before saving it.

Worth knowing is that the screen recording update comes with a series of glitches at this point, but it shouldn’t take too long before the software giant manages to resolve them.

“We are aware of a couple issues that may impact your experience with this preview. Some users might notice a slight delay between when you click “Start” and when the recording begins. There is also a known issue where the Snipping Tool app window does not restore when initiating a new snip from within the app,” the company says.
