14 DAY TRIAL // Microsoft is currently working on finalizing Windows 10 Redstone 5 (possibly called October 2018 Update), and since the focus is no longer on new features, more refinements make their way to the latest preview builds.
One such refinement can be found in the Calculator app, which has received some silent updates in the most recent Insider release in both the Fast and the Skip Ahead rings.
The Windows 10 Calculator now features an improved hamburger menu which features icons for each option for a design that makes much more sense and is a lot more intuitive. This is an approach that Microsoft has used for the Settings menu of Microsoft Edge browser as well, as the original design featured no icons but was later updated for a more compact look.
Furthermore, the Calculator app now features acrylic, which is part of the Fluent Design overhaul. Previously featuring reveal only, the Calculator app now aligns with other Windows 10 applications whose look is being revamped with Fluent Design.
Coming to everyone in Redstone 5
Microsoft has also updated the About section of Calculator, now being displayed in a dedicated flyout and no longer eating up the entire panel as it was the case in the previous versions.
As you can see in the screenshot below, the Calculator app that comes with all these improvements is version 10.1807.2121.0. All images were taken on Windows 10 build 18204 (Redstone 6) in the Skip Ahead ring.
Most likely, the refined Calculator app will be part of the Redstone 5 release in the fall. This OS feature update has already entered the latest stages of development, and according to Microsoft’s typical schedule, it should be finalized in September, while the public rollout should begin in October.
As usual, insiders will be the first ones to get the RTM build, while systems across the world would receive it as part of a gradual release.
