Microsoft provides workaround for build 25284 users

The most recent Windows 11 preview build comes with a bug that breaks down VPN connections. Available in the Dev channel of the Windows Insider program, build 25284 obviously impacts business users, as home users are unlikely to use a VPN.

Microsoft also says that home VPN connections are unlikely to be impacted.

“To be clear:  most users will not be affected by this bug.  While this bug affects VPN connections, it will most likely appear for users running VPN in a corporate or enterprise environment.  For standard home VPN connections, users should not encounter this bug.  Nonetheless, we chose to document it and list this workaround to keep affected users productive,” the company explains in a post.

“One more note:  If you use this workaround while the bug is present, you will need to "turn the workaround off" once we release a build with the bugfix.  Again, this workaround is temporary, and you'll need to disable it once the fix is out.”

The workaround pretty much comes down to changing the NetBIOS configuration from the Group Policy editor, and you can find all the steps on the linked page here.

The company says a full fix is already in the works, but for the time being, there’s no ETA as to when it could be shipped to users. Microsoft typically releases new Windows 11 builds every week in the Dev channel, so fingers crossed for a patch to be part of the next update.

Windows 11 build 25284 comes with one big change: it witnesses the debut of the very first third-party widget, as Facebook is bringing the Messenger app to the widgets board. Microsoft says more such widgets will go live in the coming weeks and months, so the widget experience is finally getting the update that Microsoft has been aiming for since its launch.
