All due to the most recent Windows 10 updates

Microsoft has confirmed another glitch in Windows 10, and this time, the one to blame is none other than the update the company shipped on a Patch Tuesday.

In other words, users who install the Windows 10 cumulative update release in September and later could end up noticing a flicker of the taskbar elements, eventually leading to device instability.

In a post on the Microsoft Health dashboard, the company says the weather or the News and Interests widget could end up flickering, and in the worst case scenario, not only Windows Explorer but also the taskbar could stop responding completely.

The following issues could be encountered after installing these updates:

  • The Weather or News and Interests widget or icons flickers on the Windows taskbar
  • The Windows taskbar stops responding
  • Windows Explorer stops responding
  • Applications including Microsoft Word or Excel might stop responding if they are open when the issue occurs

Microsoft says that in some cases, a simple device restart could bring things back to normal, but this is just a matter of luck, and in some cases, the fix would only be available temporarily.

The good news is that Microsoft has already managed to address the glitch with the Known Issue Rollback system, meaning that users don’t have to do anything on their side for now.

“This issue is resolved using Known Issue Rollback (KIR). KIRs are applied to most consumer (home) and non-managed devices without the need for any manual action. Please note that it might take up to 24 hours for the resolution to propagate automatically to these devices. Restarting your Windows device might help the resolution apply to your device faster,” the company says.

In the meantime, Microsoft says it’s working around the clock on a full fix, but for now, there’s no information as to when it could be released to Windows 10 devices out there.
