Windows 11 will be free for certain Windows 10 devices

Just like in the case of Windows 10, which was offered as a free upgrade for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 devices, Windows 11 will be available at no cost for certain computers running Windows 10.

The free upgrade is projected to land in the fall of 2021, though Microsoft explains that most eligible computers will get it in early 2022 as part of a global rollout that would take place in stages.

But more important, while Microsoft hasn’t announced an ETA as to when the free upgrade promo could come to an end, the software giant doesn’t rule out this possibility, explaining that at one point, it may no longer allow eligible devices to install Windows 11 free of charge.

Windows 10 to be supported until 2025

However, the free Windows 11 upgrade will be available for at least one year, Microsoft says, which means that owners of eligible Windows 10 devices should be able to install the new operating system at no cost if the upgrade is performed in the first 12 months after launch.

“The free upgrade offer does not have a specific end date for eligible systems. However, Microsoft reserves the right to eventually end support for the free offer. This end date will be no sooner than one year from general availability,” Microsoft explains.

Owners of eligible devices who don’t make the switch to Windows 11 can very well continue to use Windows 10, as the current operating system would be supported until 2025. The upgrade isn’t mandatory, though by sticking with Windows 10, you would miss on a lot of improvements, including a new Start menu and taskbar experience, support for Android apps, and so much more.

Microsoft plans to launch Windows 11 in the fall of the year, and there’s evidence the operating system would land for the first devices in October.
