Microsoft has released a new firmware update for its flagship Windows 10 Mobile devices that finally brings double tap to wake, a feature that should have been there in the first place since launch.

The new firmware update is shipped to both the Lumia 950 and 950 XL and comes with several improvements, including this eagerly anticipated double tap to wake that allows users to simply wake the devices by double-tapping the display. This feature is already there in other Lumia models that launched with Windows Phone and now run Windows 10 Mobile, but for some reason, Microsoft’s latest flagships didn’t get it.

But with firmware version 01078.00053.16236.35xxx, things are finally back to normal, and additionally, you’re also getting some other goodies too.

Improvements in the new firmware version

First and foremost, this new firmware seems to address the Wi-Fi connectivity issues that some users have been experiencing lately. Microsoft says that fixes for Wi-Fi connection dropping randomly and Wi-Fi scan occasionally returning no results are packed into the new firmware version.

Additionally, there are several Bluetooth connectivity, stability, and reliability improvements in this new release, and Microsoft points out that it also focused on making the camera better on Lumia 950 and 950 XL.

There are many “camera improvements, including improved image and video quality, improved Auto-focus and fix for a problem that was causing slow motion capture to skip frames for some users,” the company explains in the release notes, which you can read in full in the comment box after the jump.

Devices on which users experienced scrambled voice call audio should see a significant improvement after installing this new firmware update, and Microsoft says that cellular connectivity enhancements should also be noticed, as random network losses should no longer occur.

Just like any other firmware update, you can get this via the phone’s update section, but make sure you charge the handset’s battery or plug it into the charger before starting the install.
