The mythic smartphone might still be months or years away

There's a myth circulating among Windows Phone fans, which claims Microsoft plans to launch a metal-clad smartphone under the Surface banner.

In fact, the so-called Surface Phone might not even be launched with this name, as Microsoft is likely to opt for a more conservative approach and release it under the Lumia brand.

Anyway, it appears that new info about the Surface Phone has just emerged online though it's certainly nothing to be hyped about.

The folks over at WindowsCentral report that a reference to a mysterious smartphone has been made in a behind-the-scene article by Wired. Here is the exact quote from that report:

“But as soon as we start talking about it, he gets distracted by a CNC machine that's milling a Surface Book's bottom bucket. Panay just watches it for a moment, carving over and over to form the antenna gap.

“A few machines away, another machine works on a prototype of a new phone. And there are rooms everywhere in Building 87—top-secret ones—filled with new devices. Panay has to go check on them, too.”

Everyone jump aboard the hype train

Unfortunately, this could be any phone that Microsoft has in the works. The only thing that hints at the possibility of this being the Surface Phone is the fact that it's manufactured very close to where Surface Books are made.

And even if this is indeed the long-time rumored Surface Phone, a final version of the device could be years away. In fact, we might not even see it on the market if the new Lumia smartphones with Windows 10 Mobile don't sell well enough.

Let's not delude ourselves, not even the Surface Phone could save Windows Phone platform right now. Only Microsoft can save its own mobile operating system, but only by taking the right decisions.
