“People love asking that,” he said in a recent interview

The Surface Phone is believed to be the next big thing happening for Windows 10 Mobile at Microsoft, but for the moment, there's no confirmation that this device could launch next year, and more importantly, there's no evidence that this project actually exists.

Panos Panay, the man in charge of devices at Microsoft and the creator of the Surface portfolio, is naturally the first name that comes to everyone's mind when looking for information regarding a Surface Phone, so it's not surprising that this is one of the questions he had to answer in a recent interview with GeekWire.

“We're working on a lot of stuff”

But Panay has actually avoided to offer a clear answer, and although he hasn't denied the possibility of seeing a Surface Phone launching soon, he hasn't said that such a device is coming either.

“People love asking that. Again, nice try. I think you have to continuously check the landscape of what needs to happen next in all our device categories. We’re working on a lot of stuff. Yeah, right now, the Lumia line is exactly what it is,” he explains.

“We have the Surface line, and we have every other device that the company makes. It really is about bringing them all together with a consistent feeling and making sure the experiences across Microsoft come to our customers. We have a lot to offer and a lot to do, but I don’t want to get trapped into, here’s what the next thing is, because that’s not exactly where I’ll go.”

Previous reports indicated that the Surface Phone could launch in 2016 with a metal case, although we're more inclined to believe that the company would use the same vapor magnesium body as it did on the Surface tablets. This offers super strength and durability, but is also very light and allows for effective cooling of the internals.

But for the moment, the Surface Phone continues to be an uncertain thing for fans across the world, so we'll just have to wait and see if this project is indeed coming next year.
