Microsoft has officially launched the “Surf Game,” an Easter egg that allows you to play a rather basic yet highly-addictive surface game right in Microsoft Edge.

Originally announced in November last year as part of the preview versions of Microsoft Edge, the game is now available for everybody running Microsoft’s new Chromium-based browser.

And of course, it comes with a series of improvements as well, so anyone can play it right now online or offline, with a series of dedicated modes, like endless, time trial, and zig-zag.

Needless to say, it comes with support for both the keyboard and mouse, but at the same time, it also works with touch and gamepads, which isn’t necessarily surprising given Microsoft has been fully committed to all these inputs.

How to play it

Additionally, Microsoft has included two extra options to improve the gameplay, such as a high-visibility mode that highlights the hit boxes around objects so you always know how close you are to hitting an object and losing the game. And then, there’s a reduced speed mode that slows downs the overall speed, so it’s more like an easy difficult setting that you can activate from settings.

“Upon the conclusion of the Easter Egg, the number one request from Insiders was to turn the surfing game into an endless runner as the permanent “offline game” for Microsoft Edge. The team took this feedback to heart and has spent the last few months polishing edge://surf and adding new gameplay features and improvements, including support for accessibility features like high contrast, screen readers, and even the Xbox Adaptive Controller,” Microsoft explains.

If you want to play the game in Microsoft Edge, the first thing you need to do is make sure that you are running the latest version of the browser. Then launch Edge and in the address bar type:

edge://surf The game should fire up in a dedicated tab, and when you’re done playing, you can just close it and your high-scores are automatically saved.
