The Surface Duo is reportedly ready for launch

Microsoft’s very first Android device, the Surface Duo, is reportedly ready for launch, and people familiar with the matter say that it’s all just a matter of time until the dual-screen model goes live.

And truth be told, Microsoft itself drops hint after hint that the device is ready for prime time, with teasers published on social media every once in a while and showing the Surface Duo being used in different scenarios.

The latest to tease the Surface Duo is Shilpa Ranganathan, Microsoft engineer working on cross-device experiences. An image that she posted on Twitter shows the two screens of the Surface Duo being used to display a recipe, and by the looks of things, there are two smaller details that can be spotted here.

New tidbits

First and foremost, it’s the hinge between the screens which isn’t as difficult to notice as many hoped it would be. With both screens flat, the Surface Duo should provide a genuine tablet experience, with everything that’s loaded technically expanding to form one big display.

This is something that makes total sense, as the dual-screen Surface Duo can thus use the available screen estate for a tablet-like experience. But the bezel at the bottom of the screens and the hinge connecting them lead to the creation of a very intrusive black part that’s easily noticeable when both displays are open.

The second odd thing is the status bar at the top, which displays things like the clock and the typical network icons on the center of the screen. While this could very well be just a smaller detail that Microsoft plans to resolve at some point shortly, this is something that’s there by design, as the centered status bar icons can also be seen in the Surface Duo emulator.

Of course, Microsoft has remained tight-lipped on the release date of the Surface Duo, but the whole thing is likely to happen rather sooner than later.
