Microsoft fanboys surely know who Joe Belfiore is, especially now that the software giant is betting so big on Windows 10 and the way it brings together mobile devices and PCs.

Belfiore is the corporate VP of Microsoft’s Operating Systems Group, and although he’s one of the main executives who used to take the stage at company events to talk about the latest products and Windows 10, he actually missed the hardware event on October 6, when Redmond introduced the Surface Book, the Surface Pro 4, the new Lumias, and the Band 2.

And it looks like he’s going to miss many more conferences in the coming months because Belfiore will take one year off from Microsoft in order to spend more time with his family.

A journey around the world

Belfiore, who has revealed that he will no longer post on Twitter in the coming 12 months, has explained on Facebook that this is the right moment to get time off because “our kids are getting almost too old for something crazy.”

The crazy adventure he’s talking about is an “educational trip of our lifetime,” as he’ll go on a journey across the world, with stops in the biggest cities, including Yokohama, Japan, Shanghai, China, and Casablanca, Morocco.

“We think a floating college campus will be an amazing environment for everyone in our family to get a chance to see and experience the diversity all around the world and better appreciate what we have here. We’ve coveted the opportunity to spend a lot of time with each other and our kids - and we’re taking advantage of it while we can!” Belfiore goes on to say.

After this trip around the globe, Belfiore will return to Microsoft, but when this happens, the company might have a completely new lineup of phones and devices, as well as big updates for its operating system. If he’s fast enough, he might be back in time for the unveiling of Surface Pro 5 and Surface Book 2.
