Is this another step towards the killing of the Lumia brand?

Windows Phone fans certainly heard that Microsoft might be planning to kill off the Lumia brand this December, and although the company hasn’t yet officially confirmed this, it keeps dropping hints that its existing phone lineup is indeed supposed to go dark.

After disappearing from the official Microsoft stores in the United Kingdom, the Lumia 950 is no longer available in Spain either, and it looks like the company has removed it from the official website as well.

MIcrosoftInsider.es writes that Lumia 950 is no longer sold in the Microsoft Store in Spain, although customers can still purchase the XL model. Furthermore, some other Windows 10 Mobile devices continue to be available, including the Lumia 650 and the HP Elite X3.

Clearing inventories

People familiar with the matter revealed earlier this year that Microsoft was planning to discontinue the Lumia brand in December all over the world, as the company wanted to switch focus to just one new model possibly launching as the Surface Phone.

Rumor had it that Microsoft wanted to sell as many Lumias as possible until stores ran out of stock, and it looks like this is what is happening right now in the company’s stores in the largest European markets.

The aforementioned source writes that Microsoft stores are no longer selling high-end Lumia phones (namely the Lumia 950 and the Lumia 950 XL) in several key markets in Europe, including the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Italy.

At this point, it doesn’t seem like Microsoft is interested in making more units available, but if the plan is indeed to phase out the Lumia brand, this is very unlikely to happen.

Of course, without an official statement from Microsoft, this is just pure speculation, but given the fact that Redmond has offered only vague statements on the future of its Lumia brand, giving up on phones is very likely to be the plan.
