New feature announced in public preview for mobile users

Microsoft’s Defender for Endpoint security software keeps evolving, and the software giant has recently announced another big update for mobile devices.

More specifically, Microsoft Defender is getting mobile network protection on iPhone and Android, though for the time being, this feature is only available as a public preview, and at this point, there’s no ETA as to when it could reached the stable phase.

“As the world continues to make sense of the digital transformation, networks are becoming increasingly complex and provide a unique avenue for nefarious activity if left unattended. To combat this, Microsoft offers a mobile network protection feature in Defender for Endpoint that helps organizations identify, assess, and remediate endpoint weaknesses with the help of robust threat intelligence,” the software giant explains.

Just a public preview for now, feedback obviously essential

The Redmond-based software giant says its security software can protect against Wi-Fi related threats and provide notifications whenever any suspicious activity is detected.

Here’s the feature lineup, as provided by Microsoft:

  • Protection against rogue Wi-Fi-related threats and rogue hardware like pineapple devices
  • Notifications when a Wi-Fi-related threat is detected
  • An in-app guided experience to connect to secure networks
  • Remediation options to change networks when a network is determined as unsecure or suspicious
  • A medium priority alert when a suspicious network is detected, and an informational alert when an open network is detected.

The full instructions on how to enable the preview on Android and iPhone are available on this page right here.

Needless to say, it’s important to keep in mind this is just a public preview, so some things may not work exactly as you’d expected them to work. This is the reason why providing feedback to Microsoft is essential for the future of this feature, especially as everything must be much more polished when the general availability is reached.
