The Surface Duo still has a 2020 release target

Microsoft has recently confirmed that it’s pushing back the Surface Neo dual-screen device powered by Windows 10X, but as far as the other ambitious dual-screen model that the company announced last year, nothing seems to have changed here.

AA reports via undisclosed sources that Microsoft still wants to launch the Surface Duo Android phone this year, albeit the timing details haven’t been decided until now.

The reason is as simple as it could: Microsoft’s original release target has been impacted by the ongoing health crisis, so the company is now rethinking its calendar to make sure it brings the device to the market at the right moment.

No timing specifics yet

Of course, the date is nearly impossible to anticipate at this point, but with the Build developer conference taking place later this year, I wouldn’t really be surprised if Microsoft shares more information on its Surface Duo plans at the event.

One thing is sure, though: the Surface Duo is an essential product in Microsoft’s hardware strategy and bringing it to the market at the right time is critical for the company. Originally, the Surface Duo was due in the holiday of this year, but some people said it could go live even earlier.

The good news at this point, however, is that the device isn’t delayed, as pushing it back could mean Microsoft might be late to the dual-screen phone market that it wants so hard to be part of.

The Surface Duo was supposed to come with Android 9 running on a Snapdragon 855 processor but upgraded specs shouldn’t be a surprise given the launch date. One thing that is very likely to change is the operating system, as there’s a good chance that Microsoft installs Android A10 or even Android 11 on the Surface Duo (if the latter goes live in time for the Duo launch).
