Microsoft’s recently released Windows 11 cumulative update KB5020044 includes a fix for a critical gaming performance bug in the operating system.

Microsoft confirmed in early November that the performance of some games in Windows 11 might be impacted by a glitch because they inadvertently enable GPU debugging in the background.

As a result, the gaming experience on Windows 11 2022 Update would be severely impacted, with Microsoft also enabling an upgrade block to make sure the glitch does not affect more devices.

“Some games and apps might experience lower than expected performance or stuttering on Windows 11, version 22H2. Affected games and apps are inadvertently enabling GPU performance debugging features not meant to be used by consumers. To safeguard your upgrade experience, we have applied a compatibility hold on devices affected by this issue from being offered or installing Windows 11, version 22H2. If your organization is using Update Compliance, the safeguard IDs are 41766570 and 41990091,” Microsoft says.

The issue has finally been resolved in Windows 11 version 22H2 update KB5020044. However, worth knowing is that this update is currently available in preview phase, which means it can be downloaded by manually checking for updates in Windows Update.

The fix will become available as part of an automatic update as part of the next Patch Tuesday cycle. Until then, the upgrade block stays in place, Microsoft says.

“If you are already on Windows 11, version 22H2 and are experiencing this issue, you might be able to resolve it by updating your games and gaming related apps to the latest version available. If you are unsure how to update the games and apps you have installed, you will need to consult the developer of those games and apps but most will update automatically through the store they were purchased from or directly when opening them,” Microsoft says.
