The Duo is still on track for a summer release

Microsoft originally unveiled the Surface Duo dual-screen device in the fall of 2019, promising to bring it to the market in the holiday season of 2020.

However, people familiar with the matter revealed recently that the development of Duo advanced faster than anticipated and the device is actually ready to go live, with Microsoft planning to officially announce it before Samsung takes the wraps of the second-generation Galaxy Fold on August 5.

And yet, now it turns out that Microsoft has decided to hold back the Surface Duo and not bring it to the market so fast. In other words, it’s still supposed to launch in the summer, which is still sooner than originally announced, but a July unveiling is now rather unlikely.

This information comes via Microsoft watcher Zac Bowden, but for the time being, no information is available on why the Surface Duo has actually been pushed back.

Delay reason not disclosed

Of course, we can always speculate on the reasons for the delay, and one possible explanation could be a last-minute issue that Microsoft discovered on the Surface Duo.

But at the same time, there’s also a chance that Microsoft is working on addressing some of the things that many criticized on the Surface Duo, including the hardware specs. For example, it was believed that the Surface Duo would come with a previous-generation Snapdragon PC, which obviously doesn’t align with Microsoft’s typical Surface strategy that comes down to innovative high-end devices.

The Surface Duo is Microsoft’s first Android device, and the company delaying the launch is living proof it just doesn’t want to rush things by any means. And this can only be good news, as getting the Surface Duo right is something that Microsoft absolutely needs, especially since it’s the very first Microsoft-branded Android device.
