Many Windows phone users are currently in the process of switching to a different platform, especially after Microsoft itself acknowledged the death of the platform, so this piece of news will certainly come totally out of the blue.

The software giant has released a new Windows tool that makes it possible to quickly update phones to the latest OS version, without getting through the pain of updating from one version to another until reaching the most recent.

Called “Over-the-cable Updater tool for Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows Mobile 10,” the application comes in handy to those users who are running very old versions of Microsoft’s mobile operating systems and want to update to the latest build effortlessly, as the whole process is performed all automatically.

Probably aimed at enterprises

Of course, it only works with “eligible” Windows phones that support the latest Windows 10 Mobile version, and they’re not too many, but at least it could prove to be a very time-saving solution for those five users who continue sticking with the platform.

Truth be told, there’s a good chance this piece of software is more helpful for enterprises that need to update more than just one device to the latest version, but consumers can use it as well for the same purpose.

The updating process doesn’t require more than just a few seconds to get you started, so simply connect the phone to the PC using the official cable and then unlock the device if a PIN is being used.

As for what’s next for Windows phones, that’s not hard to guess, but Microsoft is currently getting ready to introduce Windows 10 Mobile Fall Creators Update, also known as feature2 update, to supported devices.

A release date hasn’t been announced just yet, but the RTM build has already reached the Release Preview ring of the Windows Insider program and should get the go-ahead for the production ring shortly.
