New update now available for Release Preview ring users

Microsoft has released a new cumulative update for Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809), but for the time being, it’s only available for Windows insiders in the Release Preview ring.

Windows 10 cumulative update KB4492978 increases the OS build number to 17763.349, and although there are no details available right now, I believe Microsoft is trying to experiment with a number of non-security fixes that could be shipped to everyone at a later time.

The software giant is projected to publish new cumulative updates next week as part of the March 2019 Patch Tuesday cycle, and there’s a chance that the fixes that are being tested here would be included as well.

However, it’s worth noting that the next-week release will be entirely focused on security improvements, though other smaller refinements and bug fixes will obviously be included as well.

No changelog just yet

Microsoft uses the Release Preview ring to test new cumulative updates before they are released to users in an attempt to prevent any possible issues from hitting a bigger number of devices.

This approach is being used since Microsoft rolled out the October 2018 Update, and the company will stick with it in the long term as well.

There is no changelog available for the time being, and Microsoft should detail what’s included in cumulative update KB4492978 when it goes live for production devices too.

Insiders who are currently part of the Release Preview ring can download the new cumulative update by heading over to Windows Update in the Settings app. Once KB4492978 goes live for everyone, Microsoft will also publish delta updates that are specifically aimed at fully up-to-date computers where only the latest changes are required.

As always, we’ll continue to monitor the rollout of new cumulative updates and let you know should any problems be experienced.
