New build available for users in the Skip Ahead ring

Microsoft has released a new build for Windows insiders in the Skip Ahead ring in anticipation of the Redstone 5 OS feature update projected to land in the fall of this year.

Windows 10 build 17655 comes with just one major change as compared to the previous versions, as it includes an update to the Net Adapter framework allowing for a new driver model.

With this first release, Microsoft introduces an improved Mobile Broadband (MBB) USB class driver for things like cellular connectivity. Only users whose PCs support mobile broadband can try out this feature though.

More improvements and known issues

There are just two fixes, one of which addresses a bug in Microsoft Edge that broke down dragging a favorite from one folder in the favorites bar to another. Additionally, Microsoft says it has also removed the brightness toggle from the Battery flyout in the notification area on the taskbar for what it calls “improved user experience.”

Since it’s a preview build, it obviously comes with a series of known issues as well, and one of the most important concerns the mouse cursor, which could disappear when hovering over certain UI elements and text fields. Furthermore, the software giant notes that when resuming from sleep, the desktop of computers running this build might be temporarily visible before the lock screen shows up and block access to the system.

Microsoft also reminds that Sets, the feature that brings tabs all across the operating system, comes with some bugs of its own, especially in the Office productivity suite. For example, closing one tab could minimize the entire set, while right-clicking a tab won’t bring up a context menu.

You can check out the full changelog, including the performance improvements we described above, in the box after the jump.

Windows 10 Redstone 5 is projected to see daylight in the fall, and insiders in other rings will start getting preview builds shortly after Microsoft presses the go-ahead button for the Redstone 4 update, also known as April 2018 update.
