Users in the Skip Ahead ring getting new preview build

Microsoft has just released a new Windows 10 build for Windows Insiders enrolled in the Skip Ahead ring, which is already in the Redstone 5 branch (as compared to Fast and Slow ring users who are running Redstone 4 builds).

Windows 10 build 17627 doesn’t come with any new features, and that perfectly makes sense given that Microsoft needs to pave the way for more substantial improvements coming later this year. In other words, the very first builds are mostly about laying the foundation for Redstone 5, so improvements and bug fixes are all we’ll get.

This is the case of build 17627 as well, and it includes three different fixes and just as many known issues. You can check them out in the box after the jump.

Known issues and general changes

One particular known issue concerns the Settings app, which could crash when opening links that point to the Microsoft Store. The software giant explains:

“If you open Settings and clicking on any links to the Microsoft Store or links in tips, Settings will crash. This includes the links to get themes and fonts from the Microsoft Store, as well as the link to Windows Defender.”

Windows 10 Redstone 5 is projected to launch in the fall of this year, and the full focus is now on getting ready the Redstone 4 update due next month. RS4 is scheduled to be finalized in March for insiders, who’ll be the first to get the final RTM build, while the public rollout would begin in April.

Just as it happened with the previous Windows 10 releases, the rollout will happen gradually, as this approach allows Microsoft to fix bugs and issues that would otherwise impact a bigger number of systems. Once hardware and software compatibility problems are addressed, the update is shipped to more computers. The rollout typically takes approximately 3 months before everyone is allowed to upgrade.
