Alcatel IDOL 4 Pro getting the update as we speak

Windows 10 Mobile is currently in maintenance mode, and no new features and phones are in the works, so it might be a little bit surprising that Microsoft is now shipping the Fall Creators Update to one more device.

The model in question is the Alcatel IDOL 4 Pro, which launched with Windows 10 Mobile Anniversary Update out the box and which was more or less abandoned, with no other major feature update released.

And while seeing such a device left behind raises questions regarding Microsoft’s mobile hardware strategy, especially given the specs of the IDOL 4 Pro, it now looks like the company completed development of the Fall Creators Update for this particular model and is now making it available for download.

Rolling out in stages

Previously, installing the Fall Creators Update on the Alcatel IDOL 4 Pro was only possible with a registry hack, and truth be told, everything was running kind of smoothly. This means that most likely, Microsoft didn’t have too much work to do to optimize the new OS version for this particular device, but given the winding down of the mobile development team, it took longer than expected to finalize the update.

The update appears to roll out in stages, an approach that Microsoft is using on PCs as well, and Alcatel IDOL 4 Pro can now download the Fall Creators Update in Europe, with other markets to follow soon.

There’s very little to be excited about in this update, as new features are pretty much missing, but on the other hand, you get more refinements and fixes that are clearly welcome given the current state of the platform.

As for the Spring Creators Update, which is projected to launch on PCs any minute now, there’s no chance to see it landing on phones, as Microsoft is now shipping only security updates to devices running Windows 10 Mobile.
