October 2018 Patch Tuesday rollout kicks off

Microsoft has just released new cumulative updates for Windows 10 as part of its monthly Patch Tuesday cycle, and all versions of the operating system are being targeted.

Since the rollout takes place on a Patch Tuesday, the focus is on both security and non-security improvements, resolving vulnerabilities in a series of OS components.

This month’s cumulative updates are the following: KB4462919, KB4462918, and KB4462937 for Windows 10 version 1803, 1709, and 1703, respectively.

Needless to say, since they address security flaws in Windows 10 and the built-in components, you should install them as soon as possible, though I understand everyone who just doesn’t want to rush into it.

Cumulative updates have previously proved to be rather buggy and instead of fixing issues on Windows 10 devices, they eventually generated others. Many failed to install, while some caused post-installation errors, broke down network connections, or slowed down systems.

Good news: no reports of failed installs

At this point, it’s too early to tell whether these updates could lead to such problems given that the rollout has only started, but we’ll continue to monitor the main feedback channels and let you know if this is the case.

As part of the Patch Tuesday cycle, this rollout brings fixes for Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer, the Windows Scripting engine, the Windows kernel, and other parts of the OS. Patching should be on everyone’s agenda today, particularly because of these security patches.

You can get today’s cumulative updates from Windows Update right now, while download links for stand-alone packages are available on the Microsoft Update Catalog. Delta updates will also be provided, and they include only the changes that have been released since the previous rollout.

Cumulative updates include all the previously-released fixes, so deploying the most recent version basically brings your system fully up-to-date, with no need for further patching.
