This update is live for Windows 10 version 1809

Microsoft has released an optional cumulative update for Windows 10 version 1809, also serving as a preview of the next major update cycle due on the May 2022 Patch Tuesday.

Windows 10 cumulative update KB5012636 therefore needs to be downloaded manually from Windows Update, unlikely Patch Tuesday updates that are actually pushed to most devices with automatic updates enabled.

As for what’s new in this update, Microsoft has obviously focused on bug fixes and performance improvements, with the company explaining it has also included a series of improvements for servicing the Secure Boot component on Windows.

There are plenty of improvements for enterprises, with Microsoft also revealing that it resources Active Directory Domains glitches hitting some Windows 10 devices after installing earlier updates.

“Addresses an issue that might occur when you use Netdom.exe or the Active Directory Domains and Trusts snap-in to list or modify name suffixes routing. These procedures might fail. The error message is, "Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service." This issue occurs after installing the January 2022 security update on the primary domain controller emulator (PDCe),” the company says.

The new OS build number

There are also fixes for servers and for group policies that could fail to be entirely transferred to a new computer.

“Addresses an issue that might fail to copy the security portion of a Group Policy to a machine,” Microsoft said. “Addresses an issue that might cause the server to lock up because the nonpaged pool grows and uses up all memory. After a restart, the same issue occurs again when you try to repair the damage.”

After installation, this update increases the OS build number to 17763.2867 – you can check the build number of your Windows version by typing winver in the Start menu.

All contents of this optional cumulative update will be part of the Patch Tuesday release as well.
