Microsoft has released a new cumulative update preview for Windows 10 version 2004 and Windows 10 version 20H2, allowing power users to try out the next round of improvements coming in the March 2021 Patch Tuesday a little early.

The new cumulative update is KB4601382, and it bumps the OS build number to 19041.844 on Windows 10 version 2004 and to 19042.844 on Windows 10 version 20H2.

Needless to say, given it’s an optional update, the focus isn’t on security improvements, but mostly on fixing other bugs and performance issues in Windows 10.

For example, Microsoft explains that this update resolves an issue causing what it describes as “unexpected screen” when users launch the Windows Out of the Box Experience, or OOBE.

Next Patch Tuesday on March 9

In addition, the company says it has resolved various display issues, as it follows:

  • Updates an issue in Advanced display settings that shows the incorrect refresh rates available for high dynamic range (HDR) displays.
  • Updates an issue that might cause video playback to flicker when rendering on certain low-latency capable monitors.
  • Updates an issue with screen rendering after opening games with certain hardware configurations.

The same cumulative update addresses a problem encountered with the Japanese IME Kana and breaking down some keyboard keys, including home, CTRL, and the left arrow.

You can find the full changelog in the box after the jump.

There’s no new known issue in this cumulative update, but by the time it goes live to production devices next Patch Tuesday, Microsoft could update this section, so check back next month to make sure everything is running properly. The March 2021 Patch Tuesday is projected to take place on March 9, and at that point, all Windows 10 versions will get new cumulative updates that will also include security improvements for the known vulnerabilities.
