Microsoft has released a new cumulative update for Windows 10 April 2018 Update, and since it doesn’t land on Patch Tuesday, the focus is entirely on non-security fixes.

Windows 10 cumulative update KB4346783 is available right now from Windows Update, and it bumps the OS build number to 17134.254. The changelog is huge and you can check it in full in the box after the jump

Worth highlighting is a fix aimed at a printing issue caused by a previous cumulative update labeled as KB4034681. As Microsoft explains, addressing the bug doesn’t just come down to installing this update, but additional steps including the creation of a new Registry Key setting.

“Addresses an issue that prevents printing on a 64-bit OS when 32-bit applications impersonate other users (typically by calling LogonUser). This issue occurs after installing monthly updates starting with KB4034681, released in August 2017,” Microsoft says, adding that the Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit is required to enable the Splwow64Compat App Compat Shim.

Additionally, this registry setting must be set to value 1 and the 32-bit application must be restarted:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print Setting: Splwow64Compat

One known issue

There are also fixes for touch and mouse input in Windows Presentation Foundation applications with transparent overlays and for Microsoft Foundation Class applications which sometimes experience a short flickering.

What’s very important to know is that there’s also a known issue in this update, as Microsoft explains that launching Microsoft Edge from the New Application Guard Window may fail, though using the browser normally still works correctly.

This is an older version inherited from a previous cumulative update, and Microsoft says that users need to uninstall update KB4343909 and then install KB4340917 and KB4343909. A full fix is still in the works.

New updates are expected in September as part of the Patch Tuesday cycle when security improvements will also be included.
