New CU now available for download on preview builds

Microsoft has just released a new cumulative update for Windows 10 build 14986, which means that only users enrolled in the Windows Insider program can download it for the time being.

KB3206309 is now being shipped to users via Windows Update and there’s no KB page available to provide us with more information on exactly what is being fixed with this release.

It turns out, however, that this new cumulative update bumps Windows 10 version number to 14986.1001, but it’s not clear if any other changes are included.

For the moment, it appears that KB3206309 installs fine on computers running the latest Insider builds, but we’re going to keep an eye out on reports to see if the typical problems reported by users in the past continue occurring even with this new CU.

Fixes and improvements

As is the case with all the other cumulative updates, KB3206309 is unlikely to bring anything new besides fixes and improvements for the operating system and the included apps, and the reason the company shipped it to insiders first is that it wants to test the update before releasing it to everyone.

Most likely, KB3206309 will be pushed to all users before the end of the year, which is quite a risky decision given the fact that cumulative updates are usually hit with installation issues or other bugs impacting performance and running apps. It remains to be seen, however, if users experience any kind of problem with KB3206309.

A restart is required after installing KB3206309, so make sure you save all your work before starting deployment. The same will happen when the cumulative update is pushed to all users.

As usual, everyone getting this update is recommended to install it as soon as possible given the fact that it includes bug fixes and improvements, but insiders should also keep an eye on any bugs they might come across and report them to Microsoft to have them fixed before the public release.
