New build available for PC and mobile in the fast ring

Microsoft has just released Windows 10 build 14959 for users enrolled in the fast ring of the Windows Insider program, and both PCs and smartphones are getting it right now.

Since it’s just a small version bump from the previous build, it focuses on just a few changes, but it still includes some novelties that are worth a look at after installing.

For example, this new build comes with options that allow controlling of display scaling of virtual machines on PCs, with Microsoft saying that this was a top request from insiders.

“We’ve heard your feedback that Hyper-V Virtual Machines sometimes aren’t scaled as you’d expect, so we’ve added a new Zoom option in the View menu, where you can override the default scaling and set it to 100, 125, 150 or 200 – whichever matches your preference,” Microsoft says.

New update system

Additionally, the mobile build is being published with the new update publishing system that Microsoft calls the Unified Update Platform (UUP), which substantially reduces the download size of new updates.

“We have converged technologies in our build and publishing systems to enable differential downloads for all devices built on the Mobile and PC OS. A differential download package contains only the changes that have been made since the last time you updated your device, rather than a full build,” the company says.

On Windows 10 Mobile, getting a device fully up-to-date from an older build previously required multiple update downloads, but with the new UUP, everything works just like on a PC. This means that you can easily update to the latest version with what Microsoft calls a canonical build that updates the phone in one hop.

There are also several fixes and improvements on all devices, both PCs and smartphones, and it’s important to note that on Windows 10 Mobile, users are still unable to install additional languages, keyboards and speech packs. See the full changelog in the box below.
