New cumulative update released ahead of public launch

Windows 10 Anniversary Update is almost done, and Microsoft has released a new cumulative update for insiders that pushes the latest build to version 14393.5.

Cumulative update KB3176927 is only available for devices enrolled in the fast ring and is being shipped to both PCs and mobile devices. Of course, since it’s a cumulative update that’s released just ahead of the public the launch of the Anniversary Update, it doesn’t include any new features, but only bug fixes and performance improvements that refine the operating system in anticipation of the moment when retail users get it too.

The rollout will take place in waves

August 2 is the day when Microsoft will begin the official rollout of the Anniversary Update, and Dona Sarkar, head of the Windows Insider program, warned that not everyone would get it from the very beginning.

At this point, there are 350 million devices running Windows 10, so upgrading all of them to the Anniversary Update is quite a challenge, but Microsoft instead wants to go for a staged rollout that brings the new bits to users in waves.

In other words, depending on how lucky you are, you could get the Anniversary Update on August 2, but if not, just don’t go crazy and start accusing Microsoft of not handling the release process well.

The Anniversary Update will bring a plethora of changes, and it all starts with the Start menu, which now has its very own hamburger menu to provide quick access to main system features. The focus is now on the app list, so you get to reach your apps faster than before.

Additionally, the Action Center, Cortana, the Settings screen, and pretty much all the apps that come pre-installed in Windows 10 have received more or less significant updates in the Anniversary Update, so it’s very clear that there’s absolutely no reason not to install it.

The free upgrade offer for Windows 7 and 8.1 users ends on July 29, so if you haven’t yet moved to Windows 10, you still have about three days left to perform the upgrade.
