With the Surface Pro 7 now shipping to customers who pre-ordered the device after the October 2 event, Microsoft published the very first firmware update for the device.

This means that when you’ll set up your device, you should see the new firmware update waiting in Windows Update, and you are strongly recommended to install it as soon as possible given how many improvements it comes with.

The October 21 firmware update helps improve the battery life, according to the official changelog (which you can find in full in the box after the jump). The Surface integration service device driver is also updated to version 21.25.139.0 to improve integration between services, while the audio driver further refines the Cortana speech experience.

There are no known issues in this first Surface Pro 7 firmware update, and Windows 10 October 2019 Update (version 1809) and newer is required to install it. The device should ship with Windows 10 May 2019 Update (version 1903) pre-installed, so you should be just fine.

Additionally, Microsoft has also released the first firmware update for Surface Laptop 3. This new-generation Surface Laptop is available with a choice of two processors, namely Intel and AMD, and the firmware update is available for both.

In the case of the Intel configuration, the firmware update brings battery life improvements thanks to new drivers, including for the Intel Iris Plus Graphics display adapter.

The AMD version gets nearly the same improvements, but on the other hand, the Surface HID Mini Driver also receives a bump to version 2.46.139.0 to improve device reliability.

Just like in the case of the Surface Pro 7, the Surface Laptop 3 firmware update requires Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) or newer, but the device comes with Windows 10 May 2019 Update (version 1903) anyway, so you’re good to go.
