Microsoft has released a so-called Surface Diagnostic Toolkit for Business whose purpose is to help IT pros diagnose and repair issues with the Surface devices in their organizations.

Specifically aimed at enterprises, this toolkit comes with the necessary applications to run multiple hardware tests that would eventually help administrators troubleshoot issues.

It also generates logs to analyze potential glitches, as well as a detailed report that compares the current configuration of the device with the default setup.

“The Microsoft Surface Diagnostic Toolkit for Business (SDT) enables IT administrators to quickly investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve hardware, software, and firmware issues with Surface devices. You can run a range of diagnostic tests and software repairs in addition to obtaining device health insights and guidance for resolving issues,” Microsoft explains.

Detailed tests

Tests vary depending on the hardware diagnostics that IT admins want to run. For the display, the application runs a brightness verification by starting at zero and then increasing it to the maximum 100 percent, requiring input from users to determine whether it is working correctly.

The solution also bundles automatic fixes that can help deal with the most common problems, and also offers detailed logs with further info on applications, drivers, hardware, and OS issues.

“SDT is designed as an interactive tool that runs a series of tests. For each test, SDT provides instructions summarizing the nature of the test and what users should expect or look for in order for the test to be successful,” Microsoft explains.

The toolkit supports the majority of Surface devices, including the newly-launched Surface Pro 6, Surface Laptop 2, and Surface Studio 2. Older models like the Surface 3 and Surface Pro 3 are also supported.

Microsoft is betting big on enterprises for its Surface push, and solutions like this one allow the company to lend a hand to customers who embrace its devices for their employees.
