Microsoft has just released a major update for the modern version of PowerToys, introducing not only dark mode, but also a completely new tool that allows users to batch rename files.

First and foremost, with this new update PowerToys reaches version 0.12, and while this build number might not indicate any substantial changes, there are three notable additions in this release.

The first one is a dark mode, which brings PowerToys in line not only with Windows 10, but also with the rest of apps running on the OS. As you probably know already, dark modes are becoming increasingly popular on both desktop and mobile, so PowerToys getting such a visual update is quite big news.

Hello, batch renaming!

Then, version 0.12 includes a new tool called PowerRename and whose purpose is to allow for easy batch renaming.

PowerRename comes with a rather straightforward interface, and you are allowed to configure renaming rules with a number of options, such as case sensitive, exclusions, enumerations, and extensions. The whole thing is pretty fast, and helps you whenever you need to rename a bigger set of files without the need for any other third parties.

And last but not least, PowerToys 0.12 introduces a brand-new tool that is called FancyZone and which is specifically aimed at offering better workflow management with new options for window snapping.

As per Microsoft, this is “a window manager that’s designed to make it easy to arrange and snap windows into efficient layouts for your workflow. We made the editor multi-monitor aware, targeted globalization bugs, and corrected other high priority issues.”

Keep in mind that this modern version of PowerToys is still a work in progress, so you could still come across bugs, but I recommend you to keep an eye on the official GitHub page of the project and submit feedback to help improve it.
