New update specifically aimed at Windows 10 version 1809

Microsoft has released a new out-of-band update for Windows 10, though this time it’s only aimed at version 1809.

Windows 10 update KB5005394 is therefore supposed to resolve a glitch breaking down printers, scanners, and other devices on the operating system because of smart card authentication.

The bug, however, exists in other Windows 10 versions as well, so there’s a chance Microsoft would ship new updates to resolve it for everyone else rather sooner than later.

“Addresses an issue with devices that do not comply with section 3.2.1 of the RFC 4556 specification. Noncompliant printers, scanners, and multifunction devices might not work when you use smart card authentication (PIV). This issue occurs after you install the July 13, 2021 update on domain controllers (DC) in your environment. For more information, see KB5005408,” Microsoft explains.

Windows 10 version 1809 already unsupported

Worth knowing, however, is that Windows 10 version 1809 is already unsupported for most devices, as Microsoft only ships updates for Enterprise G and HoloLens, as well as LTSC editions for client, server, and IoT. Everyone else still running Windows 10 version 1809 is recommended to update to a newer version of the operating system as soon as possible.

“Windows 10, version 1809 reached end of service on May 11, 2021 for devices running the Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions. After May 11, 2021, these devices will no longer receive monthly security and quality updates that contain protection from the latest security threats. To continue receiving security and quality updates, Microsoft recommends updating to the latest version of Windows 10,” Microsoft explains.

At this point, it’s not yet clear when the fix for the rest of Windows 10 versions could land, but there’s a chance it’d be included in the preview updates projected to see daylight rather sooner than later.
