New update for the OneDrive app released on Android

Microsoft has just shipped another update for the official OneDrive app on Android, only a few weeks after releasing a major overhaul with an improved look and new features.

Now at version 5.2, OneDrive for Android introduces full support for Android Notification Channels, which Microsoft says should help users “take full control over notifications.”

The rest of the change log includes updates that were introduced with the previous version, including a new look and feel and quick access to shared files, recent items, and sites thanks to tab bar navigation. Version 5.1 was released on December 7.

On the other hand, today’s update lands after only four different beta builds, with the last one (beta 4) shipped on December 20. Work on the next release is probably under way already, with the first beta expected in early January for testers.

Version 5.1, however, brought many more changes, including the UI overhaul that brings it in line with the iOS client. Microsoft has pledged to improve its Android and iOS applications at the maximum pace in order to provide users with seamless experience regardless the platform.

Given the demise of Windows phone, this is becoming a priority for the company, with a substantial share of users switching to one of these two platforms and looking for Microsoft apps to stick with the services they were using on the company’s own operating system.

OneDrive for Android is one of Microsoft’s most successful apps on Google’s mobile platform, as the Google Play Store stats point to more than 100 million downloads. Furthermore, the app has an overall rating of 4.4 stars (out of maximum of 5) with 916,500 reviews at the time of publishing this article.
