Microsoft has just released a new firmware update for the Surface Book 2, and this time it brings quite a lot of improvements in many key areas.

First and foremost, the new firmware version improves audio performance while streaming content, and it also fixes audio issues that could lead to a Blue Screen of Death.

Microsoft says this firmware update also improves integration between system services. The following driver versions are part of this new release:

  • Realtek Semiconductor Corp. – SoftwareComponent – 11.0.6000.92
  • Realtek Semiconductor Corp. – Media – 6.0.8936.1
  • Realtek Semiconductor Corp. – Extension – 6.1.0.6
  • Surface – System – 6.94.139.0

Windows 10 version 1903 and newer required to install the firmware update

Unfortunately, this firmware update doesn’t resolve an old Surface Dock issue that’s still plaguing the Surface Book 2.

More specifically, what this problem does is cause a random disconnect that happens all of a sudden and which obviously disconnects all USB peripherals that are plugged into the dock. By the looks of things, this is quite an old problem, and Surface Book 2 users owning the original dock.

The new Surface Book 2 firmware update requires Windows 10 May 2019 Update, or version 1903, or a newer version, so if you’re already running the May 2020 Update or the October 2020 Update, which was released only a few weeks ago, you’re pretty much good to go.

Microsoft warns that not everybody gets the update on day one, and it could take a while until it shows up on Windows Update for all devices. I already received the new firmware update, and of course, the general recommendations still apply. Make sure that your laptop is fully charged before anything else, as interrupting the installation of a firmware update can cause bigger headaches to owners.
