Microsoft has seemed to be in a whole new firmware release frenzy for its Lumia 950 and 950 XL phones in the last couple of weeks, as a brand new version is now said to be available for users via the Windows Device Recovery Tool.

Usually, new firmware versions are shipped to Lumia phones over the air, but it appears that this new release is only available through the Windows Device Recovery Tool and shows up just for users in certain regions.

WMPU writes that Australian Lumia 950 XL owners are among those getting the update, which is numbered 10.0.10586.13058 for the OS version and 01078.00027.15506.020xx for the firmware version.

As far as the improvements are concerned, it appears that Microsoft has included some pretty exciting new features, at least for Australian users. Hey Cortana support arrives in the country with this update, and so is support for international keyboards. Additionally, Windows Hello and Glance screen have also received a number of undisclosed improvements.

Installing via WDRT

Certainly, installing a new firmware version via the Windows Device Recovery Tool is not everyone’s cup of tea, mostly because turning to this method involves flashing the phone completely, so you lose all your files, settings, and apps.

Obviously, you can also create a backup before anything else, but it’s undoubtedly easier to simply install the new firmware OTA and avoid all the hard work that needs to be done when setting up the phone from scratch.

And yet, installing the new firmware via WDRT is easy as pie. Just connect your phone to the Windows computer, launch the app, and let it do its magic. It should automatically detect the version running on your phone and check whether a new one is available for download. If it is, you have the option to start the download automatically. Everything is performed with zero user input, but make sure you keep the device connected to the PC all the time.
