This is the first firmware update the new flagships receive

Microsoft has just rolled out a new firmware update for Lumia 950 and 950 XL, the company’s new flagships running Windows 10 Mobile.

This is the very first firmware update the two phones receive since their debut in late October/November (depending on market), and is also expected to be the first in a long series of releases that will continue in 2016.

Right now, the new firmware is being pushed to phones across the world, so in case you don’t see it just yet, try again in a couple of hours. The rollout takes place in waves, so it could take a while until it arrives on all phones.

What’s more, carriers are also involved in the distribution of firmware updates, so depending on your network and country, you could get the new firmware sooner or later. Microsoft has recently changed the OS update distribution system not to involve carriers anymore, but in the case of firmware updates, more work needs to be done to make the process faster and more straightforward.

Check for updates regularly

The new firmware version is 01078.00027.15506.020xx and can be downloaded by going to Settings > Update & Security > Phone update.

Although Microsoft hasn’t specifically said it, both the Lumia 950 and 950 XL will receive plenty of updates in the coming months, as Windows 10 Mobile is work in progress and certain features still need to be implemented.

There will clearly be more OS improvements than firmware updates, but every single release is clearly welcome for buyers of the new Lumia models. As we’ve already told you in our Lumia 950 XL review, the device needs improvements because it’s still buggy and feels slow despite its powerful hardware capabilities.

Microsoft has already promised to keep the OS and devices running its software updates thanks to the new Windows as a Service approach, so it’s just a matter of time until the next batch of improvements arrives.
