Microsoft has finally released the first Windows 10 Redstone 5 (fall 2018) build to users enrolled in the Slow ring, more than two months after beginning the public April 2018 Update rollout.

Windows 10 build 17692 is thus available for download right now for Slow ring users, and in addition to the original version that launched on June 14 for users in the Fast and Skip Ahead rings, it brings four new fixes to refine the performance of the operating system.

First and foremost, Microsoft says that it fixed an issue causing the login screen to crash in a loop when picture password is being used, as well as a bug breaking down DRM video playback in Microsoft Edge. Improved reliability and performance for the Start menu is also included in the Slow ring release, and so is a bugfix addressing keyboard settings in Ease of Access glitches.

Other than that, it’s the same build as the one published in mid-June and bringing new features like SwiftKey integration in the Windows 10 touch keyboard.

Fluent Design evolving

This build also brings the new search experience in Windows 10 that makes it possible to quickly find download links right from the desktop. With this improvement, all you need to do is to search for the name of the program alongside the term download and Windows Search should provide you with a button to get right to the download link.

Also exciting for Slow ring users should be the addition of acrylic material to menus, along with SDK improvements to feature this visual touch in Windows 10.

“With Build 17692 you will notice new acrylic backgrounds in places on the system using these controls – for example when you right-click open apps in Task View. Apps using the SDK for this build or higher will see this change by default as well,” Microsoft explains.

The new build can be downloaded right away from Windows Update. The most recent release for the Fast and Skip Ahead rings is build 17704.
