Microsoft has just released a new update for its Android browser, this time bringing it in line in terms of version number and features with the iOS flavor.

Microsoft Edge for Android has just been updated to version 42 (build number 42.0.0.2033), bringing features that the software giant has previously shipped for iOS devices as part of the testing program. Also, the features that are now available as part of the stable build were originally introduced in a beta version that was released for Android devices in May.

Microsoft’s Android browser now comes with support for school and work accounts, which is definitely a major improvement since the Redmond-based firm is aiming to expand in these markets. Android devices are becoming more prominently used in both schools and enterprises, so by enabling support for these accounts, Edge could finally be considered a solution for the entire market.

The company says that further refinements in this regard will make it to the market in the coming future, with both favorites and password syncing options currently in development.

Parental controls

Additionally, Microsoft Edge now allows parents who are logged in with family accounts to allow and block websites in the browser, which means they get better control of what their children visit when connected to the Internet.

Just like on the PC, Microsoft is also improving the document reading capabilities of Edge, so this version introduces access for books downloaded from the Microsoft Store. Some features here aren’t yet ready, like bookmarks, annotation, and highlights, but everything else should be running pretty smoothly.

And last but not least, this fresh Microsoft Edge release comes with performance improvements, so the browser should overall feel a bit faster and more responsive.

As usual, you can download the latest Microsoft Edge APK from Softpedia to try out these new improvements right away.
