Update currently available in the Release Preview ring

Microsoft has released a new cumulative update for Windows 10 users in the Release Preview ring, who are still running the October 2018 Update (version 1809).

Windows 10 cumulative update KB4482887 is thus available for download for insiders, and it is expected to be published for all version 1809 devices next Tuesday.

The update comes without a changelog, as all the other cumulative updates first released to the Preview Ring, and it increases the OS build number to 17763.346.

But even though release notes aren’t available, it’s believed that this update actually resolves a several-months-old bug in Windows 10 and affecting the way the Action Center is launched.

As many Windows 10 users discovered the hard way, the Action Center, which should show up from the right side of the screen, sometimes appears on the opposite side before going back and relaunching from the correct side. Microsoft originally repaired the bug in Windows 10 19H1 preview builds, but this appears to be the first cumulative update that ships the fix to production devices.

Update to be released next week for everyone

Microsoft has embraced a different approach for cumulative updates aimed at its latest stable version of Windows 10 after the October 2018 Update fiasco.

While originally cumulative updates were rarely published for insiders ahead of their public launch, Microsoft is now using the Release Preview ring specifically for testing such improvements before all devices get them. This way, the company can make sure that everything is working as expected without any issues that could cause the installation to fail or break down other OS features.

I expect the public rollout of cumulative update KB4482887 to take place next week, with Microsoft currently collecting data from insiders who get the update. A changelog will also be provided on Tuesday when it becomes available for all devices.
