New update bringing security fixes to phones

The December 2018 Patch Tuesday rollout not only that included plenty of fixes for Windows 10 desktops, but it also brought security updates for mobile phones running Windows 10 Mobile.

Even though the number of Windows phones still being used worldwide is very small, Microsoft still provides support for Windows 10 Mobile until 2019, according to the company’s own roadmap.

This means that while the software giant doesn’t offer any feature improvements and refinements for its phones, security fixes keep landing on Patch Tuesday to resolve vulnerabilities in the operating system.

This month, Windows 10 Mobile devices are getting cumulative update KB4478936, which increases the OS build number to 15254.544 and resolves vulnerabilities in Microsoft Edge and other OS components.

Microsoft doesn’t offer a mobile-specific changelog, as the company lists the same fixes as for PCs, but there’s a chance that some of the improvements that are included in this cumulative update are optimized for mobile devices.

What’s next for Windows phones?

I’m pretty sure that everyone already knows the answer to this question, as Microsoft itself recommended users to switch to Android and iOS if they want app support and new devices.

The software giant confirmed earlier this year that Windows 10 Mobile entered maintenance mode, which means that no new features would be developed, as the focus on the operating system would be gradually reduced as we approach the end of support deadline.

The market share of Windows phones is currently close to 0 percent, and that makes perfect sense given that no new devices are planned and most developers are now abandoning the platform.

If any users are still running Windows phones, installing this new cumulative update should be a priority, especially because it resolves vulnerabilities that would otherwise expose devices to exploits.
