New cumulative update available in the RP ring

Microsoft has released a new version of cumulative update KB4505903 for users in the Release Preview ring of the Windows Insider program.

The original update was published last week, and it pushed the OS build number to 18362.263. This time, the updated version of KB4505903 increases the build number to 18362.266.

While a changelog is not available, the small bump in version number is an indication that Microsoft most likely included just a small fix in this update.

Keep in mind that cumulative update KB4505903 continues to be available for Windows insiders only, as Microsoft first wants to run a series of tests before shipping it to production devices as well.

Public rollout in the coming days

This approach is being used since the October update, when Microsoft decided to release all cumulative updates to insiders in the Release Preview ring for more thorough testing. This approach seems to be paying off, as the likelihood of bugs hitting systems not enrolled in the Windows Insider program has dropped substantially.

As for what’s new in this cumulative update, this is hard to tell, as Microsoft hasn’t published a changelog for the time being. More information, however, is expected once KB4505903 gets the go-ahead for production devices, which is expected to happen by the end of the month, possibly as soon as this week.

Nevertheless, because KB4505903 doesn’t land on a Patch Tuesday, the focus will be entirely on resolving non-security issues in the operating system. Security improvements are part of Patch Tuesday rollouts, which this month took place on July 9. The next Patch Tuesday update will go live on August 13.

Windows Insiders in the RP ring can download this new cumulative update right now from Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates.
