Microsoft has re-released the infamous KB4023057 Windows update, which prepares computers for the upgrade to newer operating system versions.

Described by many as a way to force devices to upgrade to the latest Windows 10 versions, KB4023057 is supposed to free up space using a variety of methods, including compressing files and running disk cleanup.

The purpose of this is to have enough storage for the installation files of the new Windows 10 version that the device will be upgraded to.

Resetting Windows Update

Update KB4023057 is aimed at all Windows 10 versions prior to 1909, so it’s believed that the re-release happens to push more devices to version 2004, or May 2020 Update. This particular Windows version was shipped in May and is still being offered to devices gradually.

“This update includes reliability improvements to Windows Update Service components in consumer Windows 10, versions 1507, 1511, 1607, 1703, 1709, 1803, 1809, 1903, and 1909. It may take steps to free up disk space on your device if you do not have enough disk space to install Windows updates,” Microsoft explains in the KB article.

“This update includes files and resources that address issues that affect the update processes in Windows 10 that may prevent important Windows updates from being installed. These improvements help make sure that updates are installed seamlessly on your device, and they help improve the reliability and security of devices that are running Windows 10.”

The update could also make other changes to the device, including resetting Windows Update, repairing disabled Windows features, and resetting network settings, Microsoft itself explains.

Needless to say, those who don’t want to upgrade to a newer version of Windows 10 just need to block this update to make sure the installation files don’t end up being downloaded on their devices.
