Microsoft has just revealed that Windows 10 is running on 200 million devices across the world, up from the 110 million figure the company announced in October.

This means that, in about three months, Windows 10 increased by 90 million installs, so approximately 30 million users upgraded to the new operating system every month.

“We are even more excited that these customers are loving Windows 10. Overall, we are seeing significantly higher customer satisfaction with Windows 10 than any prior version of Windows,” Microsoft has said today.

At the same time, the software giant claims that a hefty part of the Windows 10 share is made of new devices, as 40 percent of those currently running the new operating system became active since Black Friday.

“We’re seeing increased preference for Windows 10 with consumers. Since Black Friday, US retail PC share* for Windows 10 grew 16 points to 62% compared to the prior four weeks.  Windows 10 mix of PCs rose to 87% from 58% prior to the holiday,” the company continues.

The final goal

While these adoption figures point to rather impressive performance for Windows 10 after only five months, Microsoft’s top priority is actually to bring the new operating system on 1 billion devices by 2017.

To achieve this, the company is working to encourage enterprises to upgrade their computers to Windows 10 as well, while also putting the finishing touches on Windows 10 Mobile, the new smartphone operating system to be offered free of charge to devices running Windows Phone.

The final goal is to install Windows 10 on 1 billion devices, including here PCs, smartphones, tablets, laptops, and gaming consoles. This is because Microsoft is no longer looking at Windows as a separate piece of software for different devices, but as a single platform powering everything and offering the same experience, including look, feel, and features, everywhere.
