Still no word on support for Apple Silicon so far

Microsoft has recently confirmed that it’s working on boosting the performance of its Microsoft Teams desktop client on Macs, but further specifics haven’t been shared.

Microsoft Teams is one of the services whose adoption skyrocketed throughout 2020, and according to the latest figures shared by the Redmond-based software giant itself, it now has over 115 million daily active users.

So Microsoft is now working on all fronts at the same time, trying to bring not only more new features to subscribers across the world but also to improve the performance overall and address the issues that users are complaining about.

One of these issues is the slow performance on Macs, something that the Redmond-based software giant says it’s currently working on resolving with the release of a new update in the near future.

“Thank you for your feedback. We are continually looking to bring performance boosts to the Mac Client, including improvements with Electron 10 that are releasing. We are also aggressively addressing other areas of performance around the Mac client,” a Microsoft engineer said recently in a post on UserVoice, confirming the Microsoft Teams group is now working on improving the performance of the Mac client.

M1 support on the way

As far as support for Apple Silicon is confirmed, the only thing we got is that such a release is currently in the works, without any other specifics currently available.

Microsoft said last December that while Teams uses emulation to run on Apple Silicon, an M1-optimized version is also in the works.

“With more than 115M daily active users, Teams has become a critical part of the way many people are navigating the current situation. Teams allows you to meet, chat, call, and collaborate all in a single app. And, when people work in Teams, they all get the full breadth and depth of Microsoft 365. Microsoft Teams is currently available in Rosetta emulation mode on Macs with M1 and the browser. We are working on universal app support for M1 Macs and will share more news as our work progresses,” the company said.
