Microsoft has finally pushed the go-ahead button for Windows 10 Creators Update on Windows Update, meaning that the first users are getting the automatic upgrade right now.

The Creators Update was originally released on April 5 as a manual upgrade for users who didn’t want to wait, but now Microsoft is shipping the new OS version via Windows Update for a more automatic process.

The process works just like in the case of Windows 10 Anniversary Update, so users should see the upgrade to version 1703 in Windows Update. The new OS version downloads the necessary files before asking for a reboot to complete the install.

Rollout taking place in stages

Before rushing to Windows Update to check for the Creators Update, there’s something you need to know: the new OS version is being released in stages, which means that it could take up to several months until your PC is provided with the update. This is needed to ensure a smooth upgrade for everyone, as Microsoft continues work with partners on addressing any issues that might be experienced during or after the upgrade is performed.

Microsoft has a detailed explanation on how it plans to release the Creators Update to devices across the world:

“Like with the Anniversary Update we delivered last August, this update for Windows will proceed in phases. Based on our experience and feedback from our customers, we believe a phased approach provides the highest quality update experience to the broadest set of customers,” the company says.

“The first phase will target newer devices, especially those we tested together with our OEM hardware partners. We will then expand the Creators Update release to additional devices based on the feedback we receive during the initial phase. We’ll iterate this process over a period of several months until all compatible devices running Windows 10 worldwide are offered the Creators Update.”

The next milestone for the Creators Update rollout is the debut of the phone version, which is scheduled to take place on April 25. Just like is the case on PCs, the phone rollout will take place in stages as well, but this time availability also depends on carrier, device, and region.
