Microsoft has officially launched the first stable version of Windows Terminal for Windows 10, after the company previously introduced the first preview at the 2019 edition of the Build developer conference.

Windows Terminal has evolved a lot since the first version launched a year ago, and living proof are the massive improvements that it received during this whole time.

For example, Terminal now comes with GPU accelerated rendering, which means everything is much faster and as an extra you also get support for Unicode and UTF-8 characters.

Windows Terminal also comes with Microsoft’s own Cascadia Code font, as well as with tabs and panes, which makes it easier to work with multiple windows or command line applications.

“Windows Terminal allows you to run any command line application inside tabs and panes. You can create profiles for each of your command line applications and open them side-by-side for a seamless workflow. Each of your profiles can be uniquely customized to your liking,” Microsoft explains.

“Additionally, the terminal will automatically create profiles for you if you have Windows Subsystem for Linux distributions or additional PowerShell versions installed on your machine.”

Preview channel

There are plenty of customization options in Windows Terminal, including the famous acrylic background that’s part of Fluent Design and custom hotkeys. You can also set background images and use GIFs, as well as enable a retro terminal effect that provides “that feeling of using a classic CRT machine,” as Microsoft itself explains.

Microsoft is also launching a preview channel of Windows Terminal, which means that users who want to stay up to date with all ideas that the company is experimenting with can download an early build separately from the stable installer. Windows Monthly Preview will receive updates every month and will be available both in the Microsoft Store and on GitHub.
