Microsoft has officially announced the all-new Surface Duo 2 dual-screen device running Android, and just as expected, the new model comes with plenty of upgrades in all the areas that matter.
First and foremost, the Duo 2 comes with two 5.8-inch OLED screens with a resolution of 1344x1892 pixels, and just like on the original model, in charge of making the two displays work like one is a revolutionary hinge that allows the device to switch from one form factor to another quite easily.
When flat, the two screens give birth to an 8.3-inch display with a 90Hz refresh rate.
Android 11 out of the box
Microsoft has clearly learned from its own mistakes, so the new Duo 2 comes with upgraded internals that are really appropriate for a high-end device.
For example, power now comes from a Snapdragon 888 processor paired with 8GB of RAM. The Duo 2 will be available with a choice of 3 different storage options, starting with 128GB and ending with 512GB.
Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 are also available, and so is NFC for payments.
The camera department has been significantly upgraded this year, so the Duo 2 no longer comes with a single-camera configuration but with three different cameras, as it follows:
- Wide: 12MP, f/1.7 aperture, 27 mm, 1.4µm, dual pixel PDAF and OIS
- Telephoto: 12MP, f/2.4 aperture, 51 mm, 1.0µm, PDAF, OIS and 2X optical zoom
- Ultra-Wide: 16MP, f/2.2 aperture, 13 mm, 1.0µm, 110o diagonal field of view with distortion correction
Needless to say, the Surface Duo will continue to work with the Slim Pen developed by Microsoft.
The Surface Duo 2 is available for pre-order today in select markets, with the cheapest version to cost $1,499. Android 11 is installed out of the box, so the update to Android 12 is expected to be released at some point next year.
