Another Surface device is getting the axe

Microsoft has dropped the support for another Surface device, with the company no longer shipping updates for the Surface Laptop 2.

The end of support for this particular model was reached on December 27, and Microsoft now lists the device as unsupported. In other words, no further updates and improvements would be shipped for the Surface Laptop 2, with Microsoft now focusing exclusively on newer-generation models.

As noted by Neowin, the end of support doesn’t mean the Surface Laptop 2 would be abandoned for good. Further updates and security patches would continue to be shipped for the operating system running on the Surface Laptop 2, and this can be either Windows 10 or Windows 11, as the device is compatible with the latest operating system released by Microsoft.

Only OS updates going forward

The Redmond-based software giant itself explains on the Surface support page that the device support period isn’t the same thing as the OS version support, as the operating system would continue to be serviced just like on any other Windows device.

“The device support period defines the period during which Surface will support driver and firmware updates for a device. The Device Support Period starts when a device is released. Surface devices will receive driver and firmware updates for at least 4 years from when the device was first released. In cases where the support duration is longer than 4 years, an updated end of servicing date will be published in advance of the date of last servicing,” the company explains in a tech support document.

The Surface Laptop 3, which is the upgraded version of the model that was recently abandoned, is projected to reach the end of support on October 22, 2023. However, the next in line to get the ax is the Surface Book 2, whose end of support is projected to be reached on May 30, 2023.
